Attention!
Bath Boules, 2014 Bath has an annual Boules contest, quintessentially British with beer and Pimms - yet a French game anchors it all. Here's one of the teams. "Stay calm and carry on the bombardment" was their t-shirt motto.
Conisbrough Castle
The Keep was built around 1170 by Hamelin Plantagenet, natural brother of Henry II. English Heritage site.
Nunney Castle
From the English Heritage website: The striking and picturesque moated castle of Nunney was built in the 1370s by Sir John de la Mere, a local knight who was beginning to enjoy royal favour. Extensively modernised in the late 16th century, the castle was held for the King during the Civil War, but quickly fell to Parliamentarian cannon in 1645: not until Christmas Day 1910, however, did the gun-damaged portion of the wall finally collapse.
Ashby De La Zouch Castle
The site originated as a Norman fortified manor house in the 12th century founded by Alain de Parrhoet, la Zouch. During the next three centuries it was extended by his descendants. In 1461, the castle reverted to the Crown after the then owner James Butler, the 5th Earl of Ormonde, was executed after the Battle of Towton. Edward IV bestowed it upon William, Lord Hastings. William was awarded a licence to crenellate in 1474 and quickly started major works to extend and improve the castle. The principal building of this time was the Hastings Tower. There was also a Great Hall and other grand rooms for entertainment sited to the north of the main tower. A Chapel was built by William on the northeast corner of the castle.
Stanton Drew Stone Circle
This is the third largest collection of prehistoric standing stones in England, yet the three circles and three-stone 'cove' of Stanton Drew are surprisingly little-known. Recent surveys have revealed that they were only part of a much more elaborate ritual site.
Wisdom of Ages, Nonsense of None
In the middle of Avebury Stone Circle, the world's largest stone circle. It has been standing for 4000 years and has seen so much history. Doesn't it put some of today's nonsense into perspective? Taken in 2015, finally developed. Leica M6, Carl Zeiss 35mm, Ilford FP4
