Conisbrough Castle
The Keep was built around 1170 by Hamelin Plantagenet, natural brother of Henry II. English Heritage site.
The lofty 12th century keep of this very well-preserved building is now complete with its restored roof and floors. It had a major role to play in the Wars of the Roses, was once owned by Richard of York and even featured in Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe.
English Heritage has given this 12th century castle the latest in 21st century presentations. The keep’s three floors are inhabited by wall-projected, larger than life characters who talk to visitors, a range of audio visuals, and display panels in ‘graphic novel’ style. These tell the story of Hamelin, who built the castle, and his wife Isabel.
